Our Daily Bread (and Sweets)

The Yalaha Bakery, nestled in the hills of Lake County with its Bavarian architecture and hand-painted murals, has been the local standard bearer for European breads for almost 20 years. But the ride out to the bakery, just west of Howey-in-the-Hills is, as the Germans say, eine lange schleppen (a very long trip).

Good news, then, for all us sandwich makers, as Yalaha has added a retail outlet in Orlando right across from Lake Ivanhoe. Breads such as the dense dark rye frankenleib and hearty wheat brotchen, as well as sweets like apple tortes and Black Forest cakes, are brought down from the bakery every morning. The local store takes special orders and offers half-price sales on day-old baked items.
