Your Financial Spring-Cleaning List

That actually moves the needle.

Spring cleaning isn’t just for closets. April is a great time to “dust off” your finances – especially now that tax season is behind us and the year still has plenty of runway.

Here’s a simple, high-impact checklist you can tackle in an afternoon:

1. Update your beneficiaries (seriously)

This one matters more than most people realize. Beneficiaries on retirement accounts, life insurance, and annuities often determine where money goes, even if your will says something different. If you’ve had a major life change – marriage, divorce, kids, a loss – make sure everything is still current.

2. Consolidate old accounts and clean up clutter

Old 401(k)s, leftover IRAs, forgotten HSAs… they add up fast. You don’t always need to consolidate, but you do want to know what you have, where it is, and whether you’re paying extra fees or taking on more risk than you intended.

3. Revisit your “cash cushion”

An emergency fund isn’t a one-time decision. If your expenses changed, your cash needs probably did too. Consider whether you have enough set aside for the unexpected, and whether that cash is in the right type of account for accessibility and stability.

4. Be mindful of investment taxes

You don’t need to chase what’s “hot.” Instead, ask:

• Does this still fit my timeline?
• Am I comfortable with the ups and downs?
• Am I too concentrated in one area?

If you haven’t rebalanced or reviewed allocations in a while, a small adjustment now can prevent bigger issues later.

5. Review protection planning

Insurance isn’t exciting, but it’s part of a solid plan. A quick look at life, disability, and umbrella coverage can help you spot gaps or confirm you’re still in good shape.

6. Refresh your goals for the rest of the year

What are you prioritizing in the next 6-12 months: travel, a home project, college costs, retirement contributions, or debt payoff? Clear goals make daily money decisions easier.
