The Lake County Dragon Boat Club (aka Wun Fun Cru) has put Florida dragon boat racing on the map: it recently won the chance to compete in the International Dragon Boat Federation Club Crew World Championship in Italy in September 2024.

Not only will Wun Fun Cru have the honor of representing the United States in the world championship, but this season is its championship debut. The team secured its place in the finals by competing in three events: 200- and 500-meter sprints and a 2,000-meter endurance race.

Originating in China, dragon boat racing involves 20 paddlers, a steerperson and a drummer (who keeps time using the drum as a beat) who race a 44-foot-long canoe adorned with the head and tail of a dragon.

The team practices at the Lakeside Inn in downtown Mt. Dora at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9 a.m. on Saturdays. Come down to watch; those who’d like to join the team can do so on meetup.com by searching Lake County Dragon Boat.
