When John Legend arrives at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on March 19, Orlando audiences will experience the Grammy-winning artist in a format that strips his music down to its emotional core. We had the incredible opportunity to interview John about this upcoming performance. Here’s what he told us!

The EGOT-winning singer, songwriter and producer will perform “A Night of Songs & Stories” in the Walt Disney Theater, an intimate performance built around piano, storytelling and the songs that have shaped one of the most decorated careers in modern music.

Rather than the sweeping spectacle of a full band or arena production, the evening focuses on something simpler and more revealing. Legend sits at the piano and guides audiences through the moments that defined his life and career.

“It feels so intimate for me,” Legend said. “I feel really in conversation with the audience in a way that’s more connected. The format of the show is just me sitting at the piano playing and telling my stories.”

The performance will weave together music and personal reflections, moving through songs from across his catalog while revealing the experiences behind them.

A career built on timeless songs

Legend emerged in the early 2000s as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary R&B and soul. His debut album Get Lifted in 2004 introduced audiences to a classic piano-driven style that blended gospel roots, pop sensibility and emotional storytelling.

Over the following two decades, Legend built an expansive catalog that includes albums such as Once Again, Evolver, Love in the Future, Darkness and Light, Bigger Love and LEGEND. His songs have become staples of modern pop and R&B, with ballads like “All of Me” resonating across generations.

The March performance will feature many of those songs, but presented in a different light. Instead of full arrangements, the Orlando audience will hear them the way many were first written. Legend says the stripped-down format allows listeners to experience the music in a more direct way.

“I love the fully produced versions. I love my full band shows,” he said. “But there’s something special about doing it stripped down and acoustic. I found a lot of my fans really enjoy hearing those renditions.” The solo piano approach also inspired the 2023 release of LEGEND (Solo Piano Version), which revisited songs from his 2022 album in a quieter, more intimate arrangement.

The stories behind the music

While the music remains central, the show’s storytelling component offers something fans rarely see during traditional concerts. Legend plans to share stories from throughout his life, from early struggles trying to break into the industry to the personal moments that shaped his songwriting. Among the stories he shares is how he came to adopt the stage name “John Legend,” as well as anecdotes from his early career when he was still balancing a corporate job while trying to make music full time.

The evening also touches on more personal chapters. “I talk about the struggle to get signed,” he said. “I talk about having a corporate job before I started working full time in music. I tell some emotional stories about loss we had in my early childhood and some of the struggles we had as a family.” Those reflections, paired with the stripped-down musical performances, create what Legend describes as a conversation with the audience rather than a traditional concert. “There are some vulnerable moments, some funny moments, some emotional moments,” he said. “After the show, I just feel closer to everyone.”

One of the rare EGOT winners

Legend’s storytelling format arrives at a moment when his career has expanded far beyond recording albums.

He remains one of the few entertainers to achieve EGOT status, winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award. Across his career he has earned 12 Grammy Awards, along with an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. But Legend emphasizes that the path to that distinction reflects how his creative work has grown beyond performing. “The way that I got the EGOT was from being a producer,” he said. “I won Grammys as an artist, and I won an Oscar as a songwriter. But my Tony and Emmy are both as a producer.”

In recent years, he has expanded into producing theater, television and film while collaborating with playwrights, screenwriters and other artists. “I’ve opened up my career to include more things where I get to work with other creatives,” he said. “More collaboration, more expansion into other avenues of creativity.”

One of his newest ventures involves writing music for Broadway productions, a creative outlet he says has become one of the most rewarding parts of his career. “My only beef with writing for Broadway now is that I didn’t start it sooner,” Legend said with a laugh.

Orlando and the magic of Central Florida

Though Legend has performed across the globe, Central Florida still holds a few discoveries for him. During the conversation with Walters, the singer revealed that while his family frequently visits Disneyland in California, his children have yet to experience Walt Disney World. “Everyone tells me it’s better,” he said. He hopes to bring his family to Orlando soon so they can experience the parks together.

A rare chance to see Legend up close

For Orlando audiences, the upcoming performance offers a different way to experience one of the most recognizable voices in modern music. Instead of elaborate staging and large-scale production, “A Night of Songs & Stories” focuses on the elements that first made Legend stand out: songwriting, storytelling and a piano. The result is a performance that feels less like a concert and more like an evening spent inside the creative life of an artist.

And for fans seated inside the Walt Disney Theater on March 19, that intimacy may be the most powerful part of the night.

Tickets are still available, but they won’t last long. Don’t miss the incredible performance from EGOT-winning John Legend, courtesy of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and the Walt Disney Theater.
