Battle Lines Drawn

Our burger bash is almost here. Be there—with a big appetite.

There’s still time to be part of the beef patty frenzy that is the 2018 Orlando magazine Orlando Burger Battle on September 22. Tickets are going fast, and why not? The lineup includes burgers from The Edison, last year's Critic's Choice Championship Belt holder Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, Luke's Kitchen and Bar, White Wolf Café and Bar (last year’s People’s Choice winner), Yak & Yeti Restaurant, DoveCote, Orlando Meats and more! Plus, celebrity judges Ricky Ly of Tasty Chomps; Wendy Lopez, executive chef of Tapa Toro; Jim Colbert of battle co-host Prime Time KitchenMaxine’s on Shine namesake Maxine Earhart; and me (!). There’s also craft beer from Crooked Can Brewing Company and music by local legends The Supervillains. Don't delay— tickets are going fast fast, fast! (P.S.: use the code “PTK” for a 20% discount.)

This Saturday the 15th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., East End Market hosts Florida Ferment Fest, a celebration of all things fermented. Elliot Hills, the culinary director of Orlando Meats, will be running a demo on how to make inoculated sour mash hot sauce. A pickled swap meet happens in the courtyard (bring your pickles, krauts and kimchis!), talks on fermenting vegetables and demos and workshops will occur.

As I mentioned in my previous column, the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Show last week was the setting for chef Kathleen Blake of The Rusty Spoon receiving The Beacon Award, presented by The Foodservice Council for Women, honoring her work to advance the role of women in the food industry. The award (a rather enormous glass figurine) was presented as part of a panel discussion on the future of the food biz that included Blake, Orlando’s Retro Rad rock star Emily Ellyn, the aforementioned Wendy Lopez, media celeb Ingrid Hoffmann, Mareya Ibrahim of “The Fit Foodie," and cupcake entrepreneur Letty Alvarez of LA Sweetz. Blake says she owes her success to sticking to her vision and the support she’s gotten from the Orlando community and her parents (who were watching the proceedings on Facebook Live courtesy of her husband and partner, William). A well deserved award for one of the country’s best chefs.
