When XL106.7 FM personality “Johnny Magic” was named one of Orlando’s 10 Most Eligible Singles in 1995, he was 31 and a popular man-about-town. Yet the man behind that persona, John Hill, said he wouldn’t mind finding the right woman.

It took him almost 20 more years, but Hill finally found her.

On July 18 last year, he married Mariela Lora Tolentino in an emotional ceremony at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World. The groom did most of the crying, so touched was he by the event.

Theirs was not a whirlwind romance. Johnny and Mariela were introduced by a friend of hers in 2010, but maintained a casual, social media-only acquaintance for two years.

On their first date—Nov. 30, 2012—Johnny says everything changed for him when Mariela grabbed his hand to say grace before their meal. “I’m a very spiritual person,” he says.

One year and nine months later, he proposed on bended knee.

The couple are reveling in married life. Johnny is adopting Mariela’s son, Alexander. The two formed “an instant connection,” Mariela says.

“I’m a house cat now,” says Johnny, 51. “I wouldn’t even know how to survive outside anymore.”
