What's the soundtrack at your favorite restaurant? Take a listen.



 
Sitting in the Richmond, Virginia, airport recently (actually, in the airport Applebee’s, which is the only place to eat something other than an extraordinarily overpriced bag of chips), I was struck by the quality of the soundtrack. That is to say, the music (do we still use the term Muzak?) was remarkable, a mix of indie faves (Vienna Teng and Cage the Elephant with Neighborhood Nachos? Yes!) and obscure album tracks from Franz Ferdinand and Death Cab for Cutie. Here is their actual Spotify playlist.

Orlando’s own Sonny’s BBQ put together four “saucy” playlists; Original (Hootie, Petty and the Doobies), Smokin’ (The Clash, who followed me throughout this trip—heard Rock the Casbah in Walmart), Sizzlin’ (Linda Ronstadt, Springsteen) and Sweet (The Archies’ Sugar Sugar … get it?).
 
 
Yard House rocks to Katy Perry, Journey and, appropriately, Jimmy Buffett’s “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” Bonefish Grill ‘casts on Pandora. Shake Shack posts a new playlist monthly.
 
House of Blues has specific playlists for Thanksgiving and Halloween, and a you-heard-it-here soundtrack for the Orlando HOB, which includes local metal gods Trivium.

Local parks blogger Epbot amassed a YouTube playlist of every song heard at Toothsome's Chocolate Emporium at Universal’s CityWalk, with steampunky remixes of Cab Calloway, Benny Goodman and Django Reinhardt.

  • The City of Orlando has begun a food waste collection program, offering to recycle kitchen scraps, including meat, bones, and dairy, at the Parramore, Lake Eola, and Audubon Park farmers markets.

 

  • After the departure of Executive Pastry Chef David Ramirez, who left in April to focus on his thriving chocolate business, Rosen Centre has appointed Alon Gontowski to the sweet position. Chef Gontowski has worked at JW Marriott, Harrah's, Desert Inn and The Rio, all in Las Vegas, and Tampa's Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. He captured a silver medal in the American Culinary Federation's pastry competition and a Guinness World Record as part of the team that created the world's largest wedding cake. He also won the Food Network's Sweet Genius TV competition.

 

  • In similar news, Raglan Road was the nexus of surprising news in December 2017 when founding chef Kevin Dundon decided his focus needed to be back home in Ireland and retired from the purpose-built Disney Springs restaurant. Directing the kitchen now is Mark O’Neill, who comes from Ireland by way of London’s 40/30 restaurant, and several Michelin Star restaurants: Thornton in Dublin; Bon Appetit in the coastal village of Malahide, Ireland; and The Green House in Mayfair, London.
