Señoritas and Windmills

October 10-12 The Orlando Ballet opens its new season with Don Quixote, considered one of the most joyous and festive of the classical ballets. Based on a portion of the novel by Miguel de Cervantes, the ballet features a love triangle involving a beautiful woman betrothed to a rich man but in love with a young villager, as well as the chivalry of the title character and his faithful servant, Sancho Panza. Black and White and Color

Through November 2 Two of four exhibitions at the Southeast Museum of Photography close early next month: 
Behind the Velvet Rope, photos by White House correspondent Chris Usher, which look at the day-to-day and behind-the-scenes workings in the back rooms and power corridors of Washington; and The Florida Wetlands, Lee Dunkel’s perspective on Florida’s natural world.

October 4-January 18 Next at Southeast Museum are Photographs by Jill Greenberg, who aims her lens at monkeys, bears and crying children, and Heresies, a retrospective of four decades of work by Pedro Meyer, opening simultaneously in 60 museums worldwide. Wild Woman and War

October 12 The Bach Festival Society of Winter Park launches a new Visiting Artists Series with French pianist Hélène Grimaud, an international performer and self-described “wild woman” who contends that while music saved her, so, too, did an encounter in Tallahassee with a wolf–dog mix, which awakened an appreciation for wolves and led her to establish the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, New York. She has won numerous music awards and is an officer of the French Order of Arts and Literature. 3 p.m. $30-$40. Tiedtke Concert Hall, Rollins College.

October 25 and 26 Later in the month, the society presents the first in the season’s Choral Masterworks Series, Haydn’s “Mass in Time of War.” The Bach Festival Choir and Orchestra also perform Mendelssohn’s “War March of the Priests” and Paul Moravec’s “Songs of Love and War.” Soloists include Kevin Deas, Matthew Swope, Joanna Mongiardo and Cherry Duke. Dorothy and Toto on Stage: Oh, My!

October 21-26 Munchkins, flying monkeys, an Art Deco Oz, plus a corn-fed girl from Kansas and her little dog, too, are all on hand as SunTrust Broadway in Orlando presents Wizard of Oz, a celebration of the famed 1939 film starring Judy Garland. Moon Over This Music

October 13 The Orlando Philharmonic’s Christopher Wilkins hosts and conducts Focus I: Schubertiade, presenting the music of Schubert, Mozart, Salieri and Wolf. October 18 A few days later, Michael Andrew and Swingerhead jam with the OPO for Super Series II: Fly Me to the Moon. Music includes “Moonglow,” “Moon River,” “Fly Me to the Moon” and a tribute to Frank Sinatra. Swan Lake

October 18 Music, art, and above all, the regal beauty of swans are at the heart of a first-of-its-kind Swan Roundup and Swan Soiree at the Lake Eola Amphitheater. The event is put on by The Regal Swan Foundation, whose veterinary team is responsible for the care of the swans at Lake Eola. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the team will give the swans annual medical exams and immunizations, while visitors are entertained by musical guests 94 East and Italian artist Guido Daniele. Explosive Art

Through January 4 The Cornell Fine Arts Museum brings us three diverse fall offerings. Sordid and Sacred: The Beggars in Rembrandt’s Etchings showcases 35 rare etchings by the master artist and is exclusive to the Cornell in Florida. New York-based artist L.C. Armstrong creates vibrant landscapes by lighting a bomb fuse and pressing it to the canvas as part of her technique. Josef Albers Color Genius presents 27 prints to show how his work with color influenced art education. The Cornell also has 21 Small Paintings From the Permanent Collection on exhibit this season.
