Spotlight on Lips
How to incorporate a trendy pop of lip color into your big day look.
Fall 2013 Bridal Fashion Week embraced an alluring wedding makeup trend—big, bright, bold lips. Designers from Amsale, whose models touted a tomato red lip, to Badgley Mischka, whose walkers wore a hot pink pout, went all out with lipstick, a cosmetic that professional makeup artist Jennifer Beverly tells brides to embrace on their big day.
“It makes a statement,” says Beverly. “It can be an expression of personality and it’s a classic way to add a pop of color.”
You want to be careful, Beverly notes, about overdoing eye or cheek makeup if you’re going with a lip color.
“Wearing a bright lipstick lets you get away with a more simplistic eye,” says Beverly. “With the eye makeup, keep the colors neutral to define the eyes’ shape but keep the focus on the lip.”
For the cheek, she adds, use a light bronzer on the contour of the cheek and a light hue of the lipstick tone swept onto the apples of the cheeks to tie everything together. Read on for Beverly’s tips on achieving each of these looks.

“The softness of this blush-colored lip pairs well with sweet, delicate hair like this, and the youthful fishtail braid can be dressed up or down. Just spray the bottom for a really clean look or tie it with a pretty crystallized band for some glam. Also, outline your lip lightly if you choose a natural pink like this. Liner should never be darker than your lipstick.”
“A coral lip is great for a bride who wants a bright, bohemian feel. I find a feminine, sideswept bun so flattering and fun with a bold lip. I blended together BITE Beauty’s Coral tube with an orangey MAC color to get a personalized look. Combining colors can help achieve a tone that best compliments the bride’s hair and skin.”
“This rosey lip look is classic and romantic. A rich lip looks so elegant and timeless when paired with neutral eyes and a few coats of black mascara. Be sure to really define your Cupid’s bow. You can achieve the hairstyle by setting loose curls with a curling iron or wand, applying a smoothing cream, and twisting the curls together over the shoulder.”
TIPS FOR LIPS
For our “Pretty in Pink” look, use a liner as a base to keep the light lipstick from wearing off. To achieve the plumpness of our “Winter Rose” lip, apply liner just outside of your natural lip line for the illusion of fuller lips. Imitate “Eye-Catching Coral” by mixing an orangey shade with hot pink and voilà—a vivid big day color all your own.
