Hidden Gem

Explore the marshes and lakes of Orlando Wetlands Park.

Just 35 minutes east of downtown is Orlando Wetlands Park, a treasure that’s sure to relax and invigorate you at the same time. It’s 1,650 acres of hardwood hammocks, marshes and lakes, with more than 20 miles of roads and trails suitable for walking, jogging or bicycling. More than 220 bird species populate this park, and you’re also certain to see a few alligators on your sojourn. For more than 25 years, the park has been an integral part of a water treatment system: It acts as a filter to further clean reclaimed wastewater, while providing a rich habitat for plants and animals. There’s nothing quite like the quiet you experience here while walking along a berm near sunset. Best of all, it's free. The park is open from Feb. 1-Nov. 15. cityoforlando.net/wetlands
