Fall Maintenance

Now is the best time to get outside and take care of a few must-dos in the yard and around the house.

November is a great time to fertilize. During the summer months, soaring temperatures can cause your lawn to be stressed and vulnerable to disease. Fall fertilizing will feed the roots during the winter months and prepare your lawn for the cooler nights ahead. Choose a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer best suited for your type of grass—this will help produce the best results next spring.

With rain showers becoming less frequent, you’ll start to notice that your grass isn’t growing as it did a few months ago. When the growth slows, you’ll only need to mow your lawn once every two to three weeks. If you notice that your lawn’s color starts to fade or brown, it’s time to turn on the sprinklers and water those areas.

Another item for your maintenance checklist is gutters. These can often be forgotten until the neglect becomes an issue. By this time a simple fix may have become a costly repair. Be sure to remove all debris that has accumulated in the gutters as well as the downspouts. Leaving them unchecked can lead to water backing up and over flowing where it shouldn’t, causing roof damage and wood rot.
