Choosing a Photographers & Kate Spade’s Wedding Collection
Selecting a Wedding Photographer
Selecting the right photographer to capture wedding memories can be just as important as finding the perfect dress and the ideal reception venue. Here are some key tips for interviewing potential photographers.
First determine your budget and what style of photos you want. Do you want a traditional or more modern approach to your images. Don’t underestimate the cost of photography – it usually takes up about 10% of the budget. Then network with trusted friends, colleagues and family members for referrals, and when possible, review their wedding albums. This will allow you to witness the photographer’s style firsthand and determine whether or not he or she can meet your expectations. If you don’t have any referrals, look at the photographer’s experience level and their samples. Photographers that have limited samples or are hesitant to offer references are a big red flag.
Make sure you understand all of the costs associated for the day of the wedding and also for prints/reprints, etc., what is included, and how long your photographer will be there. You don’t want a special moment or event highlight to be missed,
Photographers book quickly, so select your top three picks and start interviewing as soon as possible. Clearly explain your wants and expectations, and make sure the photographer is committed to high-quality service and willing to meet your personal expectations.
Determine when and how the final product is going to be delivered – will you be buying proofs, prints or getting the pictures on disk. Most importantly, some photographers own the rights to their work and have the ability to use the pictures however they want, including their business advertisements or in printed publications. Make sure you are comfortable with your photos being used at the photographer’s discretion.
Read the contract and be sure that you’re confident with what you’re signing, especially regarding deposits, payments and policies should the photographer need to cancel or gets sick (Even wedding photographers get sick!). When in doubt, trust your gut and don’t sign until you are completely comfortable with the agreement.
I recommend getting photos on a disk so you’ll always have them and purchasing some prints of your favorites for framing in your house or as gifts. You can always take your disk to Walmart, CVS, Harmon Photo or Ritz Camera for additional copies. Wedding Belles (and Whistles)

Last month Kate Spade (one of my all-time favorite designers) held a debut party for her wedding collection in their Oak Street Shop in Chicago. Her classically simple style has now made it’s way into a bridal suite featuring shoes (of course), bridesmaid dresses, accessories (what she does best), little white dresses and even some cute stuff to take along on the honeymoon (beach bags, sandals, shorts and more). She always finds a way to capture sheer elegance with her designs. While the white dresses are mostly targeted for pre-wedding occasions, I think the short, fun styles will be a hit with brides and used as wedding gowns. Added pops of color through accessorizing with stockings, jewelry and purses are in keeping with current fashion runway and wedding trends. And I love the multi-purpose bridesmaid dresses—these would also be suitable for bridal showers, engagement parties or any other wedding celebratory soiree. Best of all, everything is under $500. Wedding Belles (and Whistles) is available online at KateSpade.com. Select products may be available in the coming months at Nordstrom at The Florida Mall. Be sure to check back, and I’ll keep you posted!
