For many Central Floridians, Pensacola has long meant one thing: beaches. Powdery white sand, emerald Gulf waters and postcard sunsets have made it a favorite weekend escape for decades. But ask Therese Felth-McKenzie, president of Art, Culture and Entertainment, Inc. (ACE), and she will quickly tell you the city’s creative pulse runs far deeper than its shoreline.

“Pensacola is so much more than just beautiful beaches,” Felth-McKenzie said. “Yes, we have the coast, and they truly are some of the best beaches you’ll find anywhere, but what surprises many first-time visitors is the depth of the cultural scene.”

For Orlando residents who already gravitate toward theater seasons, museum exhibitions and festival weekends, Pensacola offers an unexpected cultural getaway, one that blends Gulf Coast relaxation with a thriving arts scene.

A Small City With Big Cultural Anchors

ACE, the nonprofit Felth-McKenzie leads, plays a central role in nurturing the region’s creative ecosystem. The volunteer-driven organization distributes public funding through grants to local arts groups while also spearheading major marketing initiatives designed to position Pensacola as a cultural destination.

One of its most visible efforts is Vacation Artfully, a national tourism campaign promoting Pensacola as one of the country’s premier coastal communities for arts and culture. The initiative highlights the city’s museums, festivals, performing arts organizations and creative spaces, encouraging travelers to look beyond the beach when planning a visit.

“It’s about telling people that Pensacola is the place to go for everything you can think of when it comes to arts, culture and entertainment,” Felth-McKenzie said.

That message resonates because the city’s offerings are unusually robust for a community its size.

“I like to tell people there’s something for everyone,” she said. “We have what we call the ‘big five’ — the opera, symphony, theater, museum and performing arts organizations — which is quite unusual for a city our size.”

Beyond those traditional institutions, Pensacola’s cultural scene extends into unexpected territory. One standout example is the 309 Punk Project, a museum dedicated entirely to punk music and culture.

Family-friendly attractions add further depth, including the interactive MESS Hall science museum, the Pensacola Children’s Museum and the city’s historic district, where visitors can explore centuries-old architecture while learning about the region’s history.

Culture Meets Coastal Lifestyle

Part of Pensacola’s appeal lies in its balance. Visitors can spend a morning on the beach, an afternoon exploring galleries and an evening attending a performance, all within a compact, walkable downtown.

The culinary and nightlife scenes have also flourished in recent years, creating a dynamic environment for visitors seeking arts-driven experiences after dark.

“There are lots of restaurants popping up, lots of breweries and a pretty good nightlife,” Felth-McKenzie said. “Whether it’s family dinners or going out with friends, there’s always something to do.”

For Orlando travelers accustomed to big-city scale, Pensacola’s relaxed pace and welcoming atmosphere can feel refreshingly accessible.

“It has a cozy, old-time charm,” she said. “It’s not the skyscraper environment you see in bigger cities, and that’s something many people really enjoy.”

The Foo Foo Festival: A Cultural Showcase

At the center of Pensacola’s arts calendar is the Foo Foo Festival, a 12-day celebration held each November that transforms the city into a vibrant cultural hub.

Unlike traditional festivals, Foo Foo is decentralized. Events take place across multiple venues, from theaters and galleries to outdoor performance spaces, allowing visitors to explore the city while attending performances.

“It’s not one central location,” Felth-McKenzie said. “It’s a series of events happening throughout the city, and sometimes there are multiple events happening at the same time.”

The result is an energetic atmosphere, especially in the walkable downtown core.

“There’s constant movement,” she said. “People are going to shows, restaurants are full, and the entire city feels alive.”

Foo Foo Festival also coincides with the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival, further expanding the range of visual and performing arts available during the same timeframe.

Must-See Cultural Spots

For first-time visitors, Felth-McKenzie recommends beginning with two iconic venues that showcase Pensacola’s artistic character.

The historic Saenger Theatre, a beautifully restored 1920s landmark, hosts concerts, theatrical performances and festival programming throughout the year.

“It’s one of my favorite places to see a show,” she said.

Another standout is Maritime Park’s outdoor amphitheater, located along Pensacola Bay. Concertgoers enjoy performances against a scenic waterfront backdrop, with the illuminated Three Mile Bridge visible at night.

“It’s a unique venue because you’re right on the water,” she said. “It’s really special.”

Festivals Year-Round

While Foo Foo Festival is the cultural highlight, Pensacola’s events calendar remains busy throughout the year.

Upcoming attractions include the annual Crawfish Festival and Seafood Festival, both blending live entertainment with regional culinary traditions.

“I sometimes feel like there’s a festival almost every weekend,” Felth-McKenzie said.

Why Orlando Residents Should Go

For Central Floridians planning their next getaway, Pensacola offers something rare: a destination where artistic exploration and coastal relaxation exist side by side.

Visitors can enjoy the Gulf’s natural beauty while immersing themselves in performances, exhibitions and cultural events, an experience that Vacation Artfully seeks to spotlight nationwide.

“It’s about getting away to the beach but also experiencing sophisticated, fun culture in a welcoming environment,” Felth-McKenzie said.

For Orlando magazine readers who already value arts-driven travel, Pensacola may be one of Florida’s most rewarding, and underappreciated, cultural escapes.

“It’s the combination of Southern charm, historic architecture and a vibrant arts scene,” she said. “That’s what makes Pensacola special.”
