Greens powders have become incredibly prominent over the last few years, which isn’t particularly surprising as most of us know that we need to get more greens in our diet. Why wouldn’t people want to get all their greens down in one serving and not have to worry about it for the rest of the day. If only it were that simple. Not all super greens powders are created equal, and some are in fact much better than others, that’s where we come in. We tested and researched dozens of the top brands, so you don’t have to.

Do Greens Powders Really Work?
The question is never really about whether or not green vegetables are good for us, at a certain point we all pretty much instinctively know that they are. The question is whether or not we lose anything from turning them into a powder and drinking greens powder. Well the answer is yes, if they’re made properly greens powders are incredibly good for you. Supplementing your diet with greens powders have been shown to reduce the risk of developing illnesses and diseases  as well as having been shown to be almost as well absorbed by the body as their none powdered whole food counterparts.  And when we consider that almost 100% of the US population has at least one nutrient deficiency , adding greens powders into our daily routine would be a huge benefit to most of us.
What To Watch Out For In Greens Powders?
There is a catch though, is quite simply you’re looking at powder. You don’t really know what’s in it, and to make matters worse most of the manufacturers hide behind the “proprietary blend” label to avoid telling us if we’re getting the nutrition or the value that we expect from their products. There are ways to see if they’re trying to pull a fast one though without needing a laboratory at home, for example, if it’s actually possible to fit enough of the ingredients into the amount of powder for them to have the benefits they claim. For example, if you need 600mg of Ashwagandha for it to help with stress, but the proprietary blend has 30 ingredients and is only 1000mg in total, we can expect that at least some of the ingredients aren’t going to there in a larger quantity than it takes to print them on the label for advertising. A lot of brands do this unfortunately.

Best Greens Powder Overall – Super Green Tonik
Super Green Tonik stands out at the top of the green juice market for a couple of reasons, the first of which being that they have completely transparent labelling (which the creator of Super Green Tonik is very proud of) and were the first major brand to do so. This meant that they set a standard in nutrition because quite simply we could all see exactly if they’d dosed ingredients correctly for the benefits that they claim, rather than just cheeping out.
It is also one of the best tasting greens powders on the market, we’d probably rank it 2nd on this list, only behind Spruce. The mixed berry flavor is particularly good, and the mint has a nice natural taste, but there are better mint flavors out there. It’s easily mixed and generally a pleasure to have in the kitchen. When it comes to the vitamins and minerals side of things Super Green Tonik covers you for 15 of the 21 essential vitamins and minerals in just one serving, only really falling short on calcium (which is standard for greens powders), sodium and potassium, which are relatively rare deficiencies.

But, we don’t just buy greens powders for the vitamins, we want the added benefits too, as for antioxidants, prebiotics and it’s general greens blend it’s a relatively standard affair hitting all of the big ingredients you’d expect from a good greens powder, spirulina which works as a prebiotic and helps regulate blood sugar.  Collards is a little less common, but in the doses in SuperGreen tonik it effectively boosts the immune system . Spinach which has been shown to boost metabolism, raise antioxidants and have a whole host of health benefits beyond what we tend to think of in terms of iron content . Barley grass, which has a list of benefits as long as our arm when dosed above 1000mg including regulating blood pressure and sugar, boosting immunity, protecting the liver, improves digestion, improves acne, with some studies even showing it can have a mood boosting effect.  The rest of the greens powder ingredients are all solid choices too, but that’s not really where Super Green Tonik thrives.
It’s really the nootropic blend which includes correctly dosed Ashwagandha, Gingko, L-Theanine, Bacopa and Rhodiola. Meaning that Super Green Tonik is good for stress relief as shown in double blind trials  due to the Ashwagandha content, helpful for sleep due to L-Theanine and an all around brain booster with the likes of Ginko and Rodolia. And the immune blend is also strong with another host of ingredients that would by themselves be enough to be a specialized supplement.

Super Green is a resounding winner, not just for all of the health benefits, but it’s taste and all round great customer reviews. We don’t really have anything bad to say about it aside from the fact you can only get it direct from their site and they could possibly expand the flavor range.
Best Tasting Greens Powder – Spruce Greens
Next up is Spruce Greens which largely trade on the fact that they taste brilliant, unfortunately that they’re only available in mixed berry. But, it’s crisp refreshing and covers over the greens very well. Most customers review Spruce Super Greens as 5 out of 5 and most (ourselves included) stating that it far outstrips the likes of AG1. If you struggle with the taste of green powders then Spruce is definitely the one for you.
Spruce Greens Ingredients
Spruce’s main ingredients of wheat grass, barley, spirulina and spinach looks quite similar to Super Green Tonik, with a few added extras. The main difference is alfalfa which is a particularly potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory . It also has a couple of added ingredients that are particularly interesting, for example maca, which is mostly known for it’s amorous effects. It contains a fair amount of extra anti inflammatory ingredients, so would be particularly good for people who suffer from an irritable bowel. The only negative is that the part of the blend which contains Ashwagandha is only 550mg in total, meaning it can’t possibly have the ideal dosage. All in all there’s a lot of good in here, and not everybody is perfectly tolerant of Ashwagandha, so in these cases it could actually be a better choice.
Spruce Greens Rating 4.5/5
Spruce Greens is a good all around blend of nutrition and anti oxidants, and if that wasn’t enough it’s by far the best tasting. We’d highly recommend giving spruce a try if you’re not a big fan of the taste of greens powders as a whole. The only negatives are it’s slightly high price point and like a few of the other best greens powders on this list, is only available from their official website.
The Most Well Known Super Green – AG1
No list of Greens Powders would be complete without the biggest brand in the industry Athletic Greens. Largely responsible for popularizing greens powders as a whole they do offer a solid product. Not perfect by any stretch, otherwise they’d be higher up our list, but they’re still a respectable choice. They’ve got a decent and sometimes unusual flavor, using pineapple and vanilla which some would argue isn’t quite strong enough to cover over the taste of the greens, but equally that’s what a lot of people like about it. It’s not for everyone in the same way that Tonik or Spruce would suit most pallets, but again it’s not bad by any stretch.
Again, Athletic Greens AG1 does OK here, but unfortunately in packing in such a large amount of ingredients they aren’t able to include fully dosed ingredients. AG1 has a similar vitamin and mineral makeup to SuperGreen Tonik, so it’s all good there. The Superfood complex is made up largely of spirulina, apple powder, wheat grass, alfalfa and chlorella which again is all good. Chlorella being a particularly good ingredient with benefits to blood pressure, cholesterol and improves insulin regulation  helping the greens drinkers avoid blood sugar crashes through the day.
Where things fall apart is their Nutrient Blend. It contains 19 ingredients and at least half of those need to be dosed at above 500mg to be effective. The total weight of the AG1 nutrient blend is 2700mg, so it doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out that the numbers don’t quite add up here. There are also a few things in this blend with little to no actual use from a nutritional standpoint, for example citric acid is typically used as a flavoring and is more known for being the sour equivalent of sugar. Usually, nutritional information in proprietary blends is listed from the most prevalent ingredient to the smallest, this means that some ingredients like Ashwagandha are unlikely to be dosed at their most effective rates. However, it does mean that we can assume Rhodiola Rosea, Milk Thistle and Dandelion are probably correctly dosed however. This means aside from the standard nutritional benefits and antioxidant/anti-inflammatory benefits of the main greens blend AG1 should deliver a few notable boosts to your brain and immune system. Milk Thistle for example seems to be quite good at regulating blood sugar  and Rosea has long been known for it’s calming effects and immune boosting abilities . There is even some suggestion that it has anti aging qualities. As for Dandelion, it has comparable effects. So there’s definitely a lot of good in here, it’s just not as good as it could appear to be at first glance.
The probiotics included are a nice touch, it’s not as good as the one in Tonik or Spruce Greens Powders, but it’s always a plus, and it’s easy enough to get an actual probiotic if that’s the main thing you’re looking for.
AG1 Rating 4/5
AG1 is the place where a lot of people start with greens powders, and it does that job well, it tastes pretty good, it’s got a lot of nutrients, it’s main mistake is that having less ingredients would have been beneficial. Having so many means the majority of AG1’s ingredients are underdosed to a point where they’re ineffectual. Sometimes less is more and this is the mistake that Athletic Greens make. It sounds good on the label to say that their super green juice contains a lot of ingredients, but ultimately then it’s not quite as good as it could’ve been.
Best Green Powder Pill – Chlorella Super Green +
Assuming that you really don’t like drinking greens powders and would rather take a pill, then we do have an option for you. It’s not going to be able to contain quite as much of the good ingredients as you’d be able to get from the best supergreens, but it’s a good option to have around if you’re on the go, travelling or to just keep at your desk in the office. It’s pretty straightforward in what it does Chorella being one of the best ingredients in super greens, for its ability to detoxify the body from toxins. The strong binding properties of chlorella to heavy metals such as cadmium, uranium, mercury, aluminum and copper. Chlorella is a freshwater algae that is loaded with vitamins and minerals that boosts the immune system and improves the digestive system by increasing good bacteria. As a source of chlorophyll, protein, iron, magnesium, and essential amino acids, it’s a stripped down supplement sure, but it’s always good in a pinch.

It’s a simple supplement, one of the best greens ingredients in a pill. We’d generally recommend that you go for a full super green powder rather than something like this, but if you’re in a pinch it’s a good option to have available. Nuzena are a good brand overall for things like this, high quality budget friendly simple supplements.
Raw Organic Perfect Food Green Superfood – The Cheap Option
We don’t really recommend Raw Organic, it’s fine, but it is cheap. And you do get what you pay for. There’s nothing particularly wrong with it, but there’s nothing that particularly stands out about it as good aside from the price point. It is the worst tasting on this list, but it doesn’t taste bad. In fact the apple is actually pretty good. We’re not particularly fans of the chocolate greens powder, but some customers are particularly fond of it. It’s ingredients are a little cheaper as you’d expect and it doesn’t contain any particularly interesting herbal extracts.
Raw Organic Ingredients
In terms of it’s main greens blend it’s quite heavy on the grasses, including oat grass, kamut as well as the standard barley, alfalfa and wheat grasses. Unfortunately, it misses out on algae’s like spirulina and chlorella which are some of the best ingredients in it’s competitors. Like most of the other grasses oat is rich in antioxidants,  although it’s not as good as the ingredients in the more expensive options. The additional beets are quite beneficial, in fact a lot of people buy beets powder specifically for it’s benefits in lowering blood pressure.  Beyond that there’s sprouts and some other greens included, they’re all reasonably healthy, but don’t contain nearly as interesting as the competition, but if you’re not getting enough greens in your diet then this is a good budget top up.
Raw Organic Rating 3/5
As we’ve mentioned Raw Organic is a cheap greens powder, that’s it’s selling point, it’s good for what it is. It’s half the price of the other competitors and really that’s the point. It’s not the best, but they can’t afford to be if they’re offering a budget option they simply can’t add in the most expensive ingredients.
Can SuperGreens Replace A Meal?
The last thing we should mention is that greens powders are not supposed to be meal replacements, despite what some people may suggest, they can be used in conjunction with a diet as they do fill you up a little, but that really is not what they’re designed for. The best way to lose weight is to slightly reduce calories and replacing an entire meal with greens powders which are typically less than 50 calories are not designed to replace a proper meal which should realistically be at least 400 calories.
Do Greens Powders Do Anything If You Already Eat Healthy?
Yes, but probably not enough to make it worth the cost, most of the best green powders on our list also contain probiotics and other beneficial extracts, but, there are dedicated supplements which can give you these benefits. The main advantage to having greens powders at home if you already get enough fruit and vegetables in your diet is having them available to cover yourself if you know you’re not going to get all your nutrients on any given day, for example, you’re going out to dinner in the evening.
Are Green Powders As Good As Fresh Greens?
Not quite, but near enough, especially if you’re not getting your nutrients at the moment. The studies show that the bioavailability is about the same, but there are benefits to eating low calorie fruit and veggies in high volume as this stops you feeling hungry throughout the day.
