How Amy Bunn, 30, and Kristopher Hanigosky, 29, met on the Fourth of July in 2004 remains a matter of dispute between the couple. According to Kris, Amy hit on him. But as Amy recalls, “I approached Kris, thinking he dated someone I knew, but I was mistaken.” Her inquiry wasn’t a come-on, she insists. “Regardless, it was a good mistake,” Amy says, “because he asked me out to dinner, and we’ve been together ever since.” They dated five and a half years before the topic of marriage came up in April 2009. Kris, an industrial engineer, and Amy, an account executive at a marketing firm, decided to spend the day boating on the Butler Chain. It appeared to be just another day on the water for the avid boaters. But as the sun began to set, Kris pulled out a ring and asked Amy to marry him. She said yes, and the two sailed off into the proverbial sunset—but with a caveat: It would be the only time she could wear her ring onboard. “Kris knows I have a tendency to lose diamond jewelry while boating,” Amy says. “So I’m allowed on boat trips, but the ring’s not. It’s much safer if it stays home.”
