A Thing of Beauty

Creating a beautiful landscape is like designing a lovely room in your home—albeit with a different canvas. The essential elements are much the same: placement, lighting, color, movement. Ideally, you want your landscape and home to complement each other. “The goal of each landscape should be…a setting that will enhance the architecture,” says Andy Swanson of Signature Landscape Contractors in Winter Park. You can see Swanson’s work and that of other local landscape experts beginning on page 34. They provide information on creating a well-balanced landscape, proper outdoor lighting, water elements—even what you can expect to pay.

Pati and Nolan Carter took on a massive interior and exterior transformation when they  remodeled their circa 1958 Winter Park home. The Carters renovated with family in mind; their daughter Kelly, son-in-law Rudy, and four grandchildren live nearby and visit almost daily. When everyone gathers at the Carter home, they enjoy spending time outdoors on the covered terrace, which overlooks the expansive backyard and Lake Virginia. Read more about the Carter’s home renovation on page 28.

You’ll also get a sneak peek of the New Southern Home in Winter Park, built for the annual Southeast Builders Conference. This stunning contemporary home incorporates design and product innovation, as well as eco-friendly elements such as a coffee table made of recycled wood, and chairs using recycled bike wheels.

Plus, you may be wilting this summer, but your flowers don’t have to. Keri Leymaster, assistant director of Harry P. Leu Gardens, recommends five beautiful flowering plants that can stand up to 90-plus degree heat and humidity and still bloom brightly. Check out the color on page 24.

Summertime is right for backyard barbecues, and we have all the tools you’ll ever need—from grill charms to three different types of rub from 4 Rivers Smokehouse. Four Rivers owner John Rivers and celebrity Chef George Duran weigh in with expert grilling techniques on page 70.

Have a great summer!
