John (Lucky) Meisenheimer, MD

ABOUT THE DOCTOR

Dr. Meisenheimer was honored last year by his alma mater, Eastern Kentucky University, when he was inducted into the distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame for his community service beyond medicine. Although well known locally as a board-certified dermatologist, board-certified Mohs surgeon, and owner of The Meisenheimer Clinic—”where the doctor sees all patients, and a human, not a computer, answers the phones”— Doc “Lucky” Meisenheimer is best recognized in the swimming community as the host of a daily open-water swim, “Lucky’s Lake Swim,” which was named a Central Florida Historic Event in 2016 by the Historical Society of Central Florida.

His free daily swim has inspired several open-water special events that have raised tens of thousands of dollars for local charities. Additionally, at the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games held in Orlando, history was made as Lucky’s Lake Swim served as the host site for their inaugural one-kilometer open-water swim.

COMMUNITY

For 36 years, thousands of swimmers from around the world have joined Lucky in his
daily morning swim, simply called “Lucky’s Lake Swim.” The World
Open Water Swimming Association ranks it as one of America’s
Top 100 open-water swims. Doc Lucky also served as the coach of
the Orange County Special Olympics Swim Team for 25 years and
continues to work with Special Olympics as a host site and sponsor for open water swimming. Dr. Meisenheimer is the president of
the Lake Cane Restoration Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to keeping Florida’s lakes free from pollution. He
was a founding member of the Orlando Underwater Hockey team
and has served as a national team physician. He also serves as the
director of the National Yo-Yo Hall of Fame and is internationally
recognized as a leading historian of the toy.
