For over 50 years, the Lombardi’s Seafood building has been a landmark in Winter Park. Until the business moved in 2015, customers who visited the iconic location at the intersection of Orange and Fairbanks avenues would be greeted with fresh seafood displays and the uncanny smell of raw fish. Now, it’s a much different—and greener—scene thanks to the building’s new occupant, The Heavy.

The Heavy is the brainchild of Orlando native Jennifer Crotty, who is also the owner of Porch Therapy, a botanical design shop in East End Market. “I’ve had a crush on this building for a long time,” she says. And once you see how she’s transformed the interior, it’s clear why the 13,000-square foot warehouse was ideal for her vision. With its high ceilings and sprawling floor space, Crotty has created a lush, plant-filled oasis. From succulents to ferns to fiddle-leaf fig trees, there’s greenery throughout, making it feel like a secret, stylish indoor garden.

“I’ve been doing the plant game for a long time,” says Crotty. “What makes us different is that we’ve always been more design-forward.” Crotty and her team’s vast knowledge of plants, paired with their eye for interiors, gives clients a curated, hands-on shopping experience, ensuring that you’ll walk away with a piece of greenery that fits your home and lifestyle.

However, the nursery side of the business is only part of what The Heavy has to offer. There is a flower bar where you can create a custom arrangement, as well as a coffee shop and an expansive gift market that includes everything from books to home décor.

More than anything Crotty wants to foster a sense of community at The Heavy, which is why she hosts dinner parties along with creative workshops and pop-up shops. Crotty has made The Heavy a place to gather, create and become inspired. 1152 Harmon Ave., Winter Park.
