If you had told Sarah Lane, 25, that she would have ended up falling in love and marrying Kyle Grover, 27, she might not have believed you. They both attended the same high school in DeLand and knew of each other through their involvement in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. But after high school, it was years until their paths crossed again. They reconnected when Sarah moved back home after college, and the couple eventually began dating.
Three years later during a vacation in Alaska, Kyle planned a day hike for Sarah’s birthday. Once they reached the top of the mountain, they stopped for a breakfast picnic. “He surprised me by bringing my favorite coffee from Florida all the way to Alaska,” says Sarah. Kyle delivered it to her steaming hot in a personalized mug. After a few sips, Sarah saw the words ‘I have a question for you’ engraved on the inside of the cup. She quickly gulped the rest of the brew to reveal the message: ‘Will you marry me?’ on the bottom of the cup. That’s when Kyle went down on one knee and proposed.
Once they were engaged, Sarah and Kyle began to think about their vision for their big day. “We had been to a lot weddings together,” says Sarah. “We both loved the outdoors, so we knew we wanted that, but we also knew that we didn’t want a rustic wedding.” During their venue search, they went to Sydonie Mansion in Zellwood and instantly decided it was the right place to have their formal, open-air affair.
A little more a hundred guests gathered last fall to watch Kyle and Sarah tie the knot. As an ode to their Christian upbringings, the couple served communion to all their guests during the ceremony. “He held the bread, and I held the wine,” says Sarah. “Doing this allowed us to make eye contact with all of our guests. We got to spend a couple seconds with every single person, which I really cherished. I loved that we did that.”
Afterward, in true Central Florida fashion, a flash thunderstorm rolled through while the wedding party was taking pictures, sending everyone for cover. Luckily, they were able to pull the tables onto the front porch, so cocktail hour and dinner continued without letting a little rain get in the way. Floral arrangements of eucalyptus, anemones, and thistle graced the exposed wood tables that were also accented by tapered candles.
Sarah and Kyle used their upcoming honeymoon to Italy as loose inspiration for the menu, so guests nibbled on hors d’oeuvres like bruschetta, plus crab fondue pastries and sausage-stuffed mushrooms, while the main dishes were asiago spinach-stuffed chicken and top sirloin. For dessert, cake was served alongside ice cream and coffee. Disposable cups for the coffee were graced with a personalized stamp that read ‘The Perfect Blend,’ while bowls for the ice cream read ‘Love Is Sweet.’
Once the rain had passed, dancing went on as planned under the stars. A guest that Sarah used to babysit sang an acoustic rendering of John Legend’s “Stay With You” for the first dance and then the DJ took over the entertainment. At the end of the night, guests celebrated the new Mr. and Mrs. with sparklers before the duo headed out in a chic 1956 Ford Fairlane Victoria.
Several months before their wedding at Zellwood’s scenic Sydonie Mansion, Sarah Lane and Kyle Grover celebrated their engagement with an outdoor photo session at Gemini Springs Park in Volusia County.
The happy couple walk arm-in-arm after the ceremony, before heading to their elegant seated dinner and outdoor reception on the wide front porch of Sydonie Mansion.
