An A&E Pocket Guide for February

LIGHTS OUT 2/28-3/1 Central Floridians don’t usually get a chance to view the Milky Way, but if you head over to downtown Harmony for the Dark Sky Festival, you’ll see millions of stars as the Osceola County town goes dark for two nights. Enjoy this low-light festival with guest speakers, NASA exhibits, stargazing through telescopes, and live music. The Starlab Mobile Planetarium will be on hand to inspire aspiring astronomers. Harmony Town Square, Harmony.

Show Some Love
Find the perfect love token for your valentine at the annual Heart and Soul gallery show in downtown Orlando’s Grand Bohemian Art Gallery. Artist Donna Dowless, Orlando’s ambassador of love, and Canadian jewelry maker Amber Higgins get to the heart of love for sale. Grand Bohemian Hotel, Orlando.
All That Jazz
Grammy award-winning jazzman Pat Metheny brings his chops to the House of Blues. After exploding onto the jazz scene at age 15, Metheny transformed jazz with his innovative use of custom guitars and other instruments. Besides touring, Metheny composes, mentors and teaches young musicians.
Now You See It
Nude Nite brings hundreds of artists to Orlando for three evenings of visual and performance art, and characters—both in and out of costume. Paintings, sculptures, experimental installations, live body painting and strolling musicians create an eclectic, creative environment. Check website for location.
Toga! Toga!
The Osceola Center for the Arts revives an oldie-but-goodie: A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum follows the comedic exploits of a Roman slave trying to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. The book is by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, with words and music by Stephen Sondheim.
Fair Game
Put away the video games and head out to the Central Florida Fair for some real action. There’s plenty of delectable food and fun rides, but be sure to explore the cultural legacy of the fair as well, including bull-riding cowboys, shooting contests and one of the largest youth livestock shows in Florida.
The Tony Award-winning musical War Horse comes to the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre. As World War I begins, Albert’s beloved horse, Joey, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. Joey’s extraordinary journey and reunion with Albert is a story of friendship, tenacity and courage and is told with human actors and life-sized wooden puppet horses.
Mighty Pen
Rollins College professor/poet Carol Frost hosts the Winter With the Writers  literary festival. This year’s lineup includes distinguished poets and novelists: Charles Simic, Justin Cronin, Alan Michael Parker, Madison Smartt Bell, and Laura van den Berg. Rollins College campus, Winter Park.
Simon & Sting Sing
Paul Simon no longer has Art Garfunkel, and Sting no longer has The Police, but they have each other in concert at the Amway Center. They’ve collaborated on a tour that features them performing solo and together. No troubled waters here—just great music.
