In May of this year, we received a letter from a 10-year-old boy from Marlton, New Jersey. Jake was given a task: select a topic he was familiar with and craft a feature article about it, in hopes of getting it published. His entire class wrote informational texts and sent them across the country. Jake chose to send his feature to us.

Upon receiving the article, we not only decided to give him the opportunity to share his work but also to catapult a new program at Orlando magazine with a mission of sharing the passion of young writers everywhere. Enter the "Kid Kontributor of the Month" program, where we spotlight one young writer (12 and under) and their feature article on a specific topic each month.

The story Jake submitted was about the rides at Universal Orlando Resort (you can read it here). Feeling inspired by his passion - and with some help from our friends at the Wyndham Grand Orlando Resort Bonnet Creek - we flew Jake and his family from New Jersey to Orlando with a new task: write a feature article on the opening of Toy Story Land, his experience at the Wyndham Grand, and interview Executive Chef Jonathan McCann. With pen and paper ready, Jake accepted the challenge.

The Best Hotel for a Vacation

By: Jake R.

Looking for a great vacation? Well an awesome resort is the Wyndham Grand resort! Drive through the gates of Disney World and there it is! My name is Jake, I am 10 years old and my family stayed here. I’m going to tell you why it is the best! It has so many activities, places to eat and awesome rooms. I hope you love it like I did!

Did you know that the Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon named Florida in 1513? The Hotel’s theme is discovery, exploring, compasses and history information all around. When you walk into the hotel there is a huge nautical star on the floor showing north, east, south and west. People at sea used this to find direction. Try and find pictures around the hotel and in the rooms of exploration to learn about it!

My family has been to a lot of hotels at Disney World and we always have a fun pool day. Wyndham Grand has 5 POOLS! (That’s A LOT!!!) It also has two awesome water slides and two really great Lazy Rivers. I love it all! We would walk around the resort and hop in different pools all day. It was so hard to choose our favorite.

My Dad would take me to play miniature golf and my Mom would play on the playground with my little brother. He tried miniature golf too, but he wasn’t getting as many holes in one as me. There are two splash pads that were a HUGE hit!! It sounds like a water park right?? I dominated at corn hole bean bag toss and shuffleboard. It wasn’t sad when we didn’t have park tickets because my parents would let me plan out the whole day! They always had fun with my choices!

The rooms were so much fun! We had the Reconnected package and it came with a fort making kit, books, a flashlight for shadow puppets and a camera that printed out pictures right away!! It was fun to see my rad selfies right away! When you put the sheets over it, it's a castle or a cave, whatever you can imagine. I locked my parents' cell phones in a box (they said ok) and we had a no phone night of just fun. And the fireworks from the parks were so close you could see them from the hotel.

There were five restaurants to pick from or you could order room service and they would bring your food up to your room! Tesoro Cove was a great breakfast place. The pancakes, bacon, potatoes and donuts were my favorite! My little brother loved the cereal, fruit and eggs. Back Bay Bar and Grill was our favorite lunch place right next to the pool. We could eat lunch very fast and jump back in the pool! Grilled cheese, chicken fingers, and my dessert was funnel cake fries with so much powdered sugar. YUUUMMM!!!! We could get ice cream from the lobby in all flavors.

We had so much fun no matter what we did. When we went to the park, a bus would pick us up and before you knew it we were there! Or we would have fun at the hotel. I can’t wait to go back and do it all again!! I hope you like it as much as I did and try to find other things that are cool too!
