July 3: The city of Altamonte Springs is celebrating the 29th year of this popular gathering, known for its live music, culinary specialties and huge lakeside fireworks show. Free admission. Czech-born American sculptor Albin Polasek’s onetime Winter Park home and studio is now a museum with an art collection focused on American representational sculpture, with more than 200 of Polasek’s works inside and out. The former residence is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Identity—Reflections of Self

Through Aug. 9: How one’s sense of self is created is at the center of this juried exhibit showcasing the works of University of Central Florida students in the Visual Arts & Design program.

Ongoing: Take a tour of Polasek’s historic home, private chapel and his three-acre garden. Put on your gardening clothes and join the staff twice weekly for demonstrations, talks and hands-on gardening. Learn why the sculpture garden is part of Polasek’s inspirational legacy.

The Research Studio

Ongoing: Maitland Art Center was founded as an art colony in 1937 by visionary American artist and architect, Jules André Smith. The center’s most significant permanent collection is the facility itself. The Research Studio, as it was originally called, is one of the few surviving examples of Mayan Revival architecture in the Southeastern United States.

A permanent exhibit honors African American educators, business owners and military personnel who helped shape west Orange County. A History Research and Education Center next door holds the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation’s collection of west Orange County documents, research material and additional photographs and artifacts.

Ongoing: Housed in the 1918 Atlantic Coast Line railroad depot, the museum features local citrus labels, a citrus packing-house replica and an audio kiosk detailing the area’s citrus history as well as Native American artifacts and photographs of the area dating back to the days of pioneer settlements.
