For 80 years, the Citrus Bowl has been more than a football game. It has been a catalyst for growth, a reflection of community spirit and a symbol of what’s possible when a region rallies around a shared purpose.

Long before Orlando’s world-famous theme parks turned it into a global destination, this city believed in the power of sports to unite people and elevate a community. That belief took shape on Jan. 1, 1947, with the inaugural Tangerine Bowl and has endured through generations of leaders, volunteers and partners who ensured the game’s lasting impact.

From those humble beginnings in a 10,000-seat stadium to showcasing some of the winningest programs in college football history, the Citrus Bowl helped Central Florida dream bigger. The game laid the foundation for a city that would grow into one of the nation’s premier sports and entertainment destinations. What began as a single bowl game has evolved into Florida

Citrus Sports (FCS), a nonprofit organization with a year-round portfolio that now includes marquee college football, international soccer, NFL events and youth sports. The Citrus Bowl’s impact has opened the door to global stages, from FIFA competitions to the NFL Pro Bowl Games , along with viral sensations like the Pop-Tarts Bowl. The expansive portfolio generates massive media exposure, reinforcing Orlando’s reputation as a
world-class host community.

Beyond the events themselves, the organization’s mission has always been rooted in people, places and partnerships. Through initiatives like Lift Orlando, FCS and its partners have helped drive more than $120 million in capital investment into neighborhoods surrounding Camping World Stadium over the past decade, using sports as a vehicle for lasting community impact.

So, as the Citrus Bowl celebrates its 80th anniversary, FCS honors the generations who built this legacy and looks ahead to what’s next. The true story of the Citrus Bowl isn’t just about great games. It’s about a community that understood, early on, the power of sport to shape its future — and continues to use that power to move Orlando forward.
