Siren Songs

If you were bummed last year that The Police only came as close as Tampa on their 30th anniversary reunion tour, cheer up, it’s our turn. Even better, in what you might call Synchronicity, the Grammy-winning, Hall of Fame group is joined by another Grammy-winning Hall of Famer, Elvis Costello. 7:30 p.m. $51-$226. Cabaret Society
May 1-18
Singer, composer, bandleader and actor Michael Andrew headlines the Orlando Cabaret Festival as the Mad Cow Theatre presents 40 shows in 18 days in this sixth annual celebration of jazz, pop and Broadway. Andrew is well known to Orlando audiences, and was the headliner at the Rainbow Room atop Rockefeller Center in New York City and the Coconut Club at Merv Griffin’s Beverly Hilton. Other offerings include three separate shows celebrating the Great American Songbooks of 1931, 1941 and 1951. Dance Mix
May 31
An international dance competition hosted by the Central Florida Ballet culminates in a Gala of the Stars, featuring top winners in each category along with dancers from Boston Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey, Momix, Cirque du Soleil and Agape, a dance group from Mexico. The World Ballet Competition is only in its second year; last year it attracted competitors to Orlando from more than 15 countries. Categories include preparatory, professional, solo, pas de deux and ensemble. 7:30 p.m. $25-$75. (Tickets for competition dances May 26-30, $10 per day or $25 for all days.) Outdoor Ballroom
May 3
Celebrating ballroom dance, the Orlando Philharmonic presents The Springs Concert: Dancing Under the Stars. The concert highlights cha cha, jive and waltz, plus Latin sounds such as mambo and tango, and culminates with a dance contest featuring local personalities. Bring a picnic and a blanket or low lawn chair. Lawn seating is first-come first-served; VIP Clubhouse tickets include dinner buffet and preferred parking. Beautiful Dreamer
May 16-18
The 19th-century tale of good and evil fairies battling over the future of a beautiful princess, The Sleeping Beauty, is danced by The Orlando Ballet to the music of Tchaikovsky played by the Orlando Philharmonic. The company promises a “lavish production,” staged by Denise Shultz and Louis Godfrey, with sets and costumes by David Walker from the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, London.
