Brad Epstein was smitten with Risa Lockenbach when they first met at the University of Central Florida in 2002. But three years of friendship would pass before they went on a date, which confirmed Brad’s first impression. They were inseparable from that moment on. Four years later, Brad, a marketing manager, proposed during a moonlit stroll on the beach of Hilton Head, S.C. The couple’s wedding honored their years together, celebrated nature and personal expression yet included Jewish wedding customs and family traditions. The couple, now both 27, were married outdoors in a contemporary setting, with a traditional Havdalah service followed by a formal Ketubah signing, then a wedding ceremony. They exchanged vows under a cloth chuppah (wedding canopy), a gift from the bride’s mother that was hand-stitched with family names dating back four generations. “We had subtle family symbolism throughout our wedding,” says Risa. “Even the décor and flower arrangements were specially designed to be unique and poetic in nature. Our entire wedding was a great representation of Brad and I, and those who are important to us. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day!”
