Q&A With a hair & makeup artist

Lena Graham

Your dress is beautiful, your veil a gossamer dream. But just as important as what you’ll wear on your wedding day are your hair and makeup. “Photos are forever,” says Lena Graham, a hair and makeup artist for Absolutely Gorgeous Brides in Winter Park. “You want to make sure you look your best.” Graham, who’s known in the business as Lena G., talked to us about the latest trends and tips for beautiful brides.

What are the top makeup trends for today’s brides?
It all depends on the theme and time of the wedding. One of the most popular is the retro smoky eye for evening, and not just black. We’re using browns and bronzes, charcoals and grays. Some of the other looks we’re doing are light lips—very natural—and a lot of corals and metallics. And very sculpted cheekbones are also important.

What are your favorite makeup tips and tricks?
Every bride wants that special glow. We recommend that they drink plenty of water to hydrate the skin and encourage them to get two facials before the wedding, one at four to eight weeks out and one at two weeks before the wedding. But the real key is moisturizer, moisturizer, moisturizer, so the skin looks healthy and vibrant. Moisturizers with a hint of glimmer can add to that glow. I always give my brides a touchup kit with powder and lip color. Lips are the most important thing. We prime and line and color the lips, but the bride needs to do touchups between the ceremony and photos.

What are the top hair trends for today’s brides?
What I’m seeing is the very messy bun; the really sculpted and traditional updo is no longer a favorite. Now brides want the sexy, messy, red carpet look; it’s very glamorous. Another top look is the pinup girl style, a Marilyn Monroe look with soft waves.

What are your favorite hair tips and tricks?
To get gorgeous curls, we use a little pomade or wax and hair spray, then curl each piece of hair and pin the loop. It keeps the hair firm but it’s not sticky or heavy. That’s what’s really in—moveable hair.
