Scare Tactics

Don't be afraid to trick up your house with these boo-tiful decorations.

1. For a more subtle approach to Halloween, look for pieces in fall hues and themes, such as these satin glass leaves. Oak or maple, $50, ginko, $53; annieglass.com. 2. Slightly scary Skelanimals are whimsical puffs of plush—there’s a bony bunny and bear, as well as dog, cat and monkey versions in a variety of sizes, $5.99-$14.99; available at Target. 3. Turn your own gourds into creepy-crawly spiders with these ingenious wrought-iron pumpkin holders. Large, $24, set of six small holders, $27.99; amazon.com. 4. Set a spook-tacular table with tealights and candleholders from PartyLite, $18.95-$39.95; partylite.com. 5. The Pumpkin Cocotte by Staub takes Halloween décor from the oven to the table, $179.99; amazon.com. 6. Well, we did say there were no rules: Halloween-themed Toilet Tattoos are easy to apply (and remove), $9.95; toilet-tatoos.com.

The great thing about decorating for Halloween is the utter lack of rules. Decorate how you want, where you want, with whatever you want. This is the one time of year when there’s no accounting for taste—and that’s a good thing.

If you’re the blood, guts and ghouls type, go ahead and put that life-size coffin with dismembered mannequin right in the middle of the living room. Or if you prefer the kinder, gentler side of the holiday, there are plenty of cuddly plush black cats, smiling pumpkins and gentle ghosts on the market.

There really is no trick to it; this is one holiday when you can treat yourself to some fun and freaky décor.
