Wedding Beauty: Keep Your Cool

Six ways to keep your makeup looking flawless on the day of your wedding.

If you’re planning a Florida wedding, the forecast will likely be hot, humid or a combination of the two. That’s why it’s crucial to choose a bridal beauty look that can withstand even the balmiest weather (and a few happy tears too). Orlando makeup artist Laura Reynolds of Laura Reynolds Artistry shares how to avoid a makeup meltdown so your complexion looks fresh from the altar to the after-party.

Consider Professional Airbrushing

If you’re hiring a makeup artist for your big day, opt for airbrush makeup. “Silicone airbrush makeup like Temptu is the most durable,” explains Reynolds. “It’s formulated differently and has smaller pigments.” This allows for fuller, more lasting coverage.

Ace Your Base

If you decide against professional airbrushing, apply liquid foundation. “Liquid will last longer than powder,” says Reynolds. Look for a formula that lasts 12-plus hours. Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Foundation ($48, is a great option. Then use a setting powder like M.A.C Cosmetics Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder ($29,

Pick The Right Formulas

Choose powder-based bronzers and blush. “They are less of an emollient and can’t get reactivated [by heat or sweat],” says Reynolds. For eyes, waterproof mascara, like Dior Diorshow Waterproof Mascara ($29.50,, is a must-have. And try a lip stain or liquid lipstick like Nars Cosmetics Powdermatte Lip Pigment ($26, for lasting yet kissable color.

Touch Up Like A Pro

After boogieing on the dance floor, it’s likely that sweat will disrupt your look. Keep blotting papers such as Sephora Collection Blotting Papers ($8, in your clutch. “Take a blot sheet, press it onto your skin gently, pat and lift up,” explains Reynolds. Don’t rub your skin, and try not to reapply more product because it can result in a caked-on finish. Another purse essential: Q-Tips. Use them to remove any running eye makeup by sweeping it away from the tear duct and outward. “If it does get smudged, it’s getting smudged in the right direction,” she says.

Avoid Over- Moisturizing

Although moisturizer should be an integral part of a daily skincare routine, skip it on the morning of your wedding. Not only will foundation adhere better to bare skin, but it also will stay put longer. “If you have any oiliness, don’t use it,” Reynolds says. “Shiny skin doesn’t translate well on film.” Use moisturizer only if you have an extra-dry complexion or if you need to hydrate certain areas of your skin.

Prime Wisely

Unless you have deep pores, acne scarring or discoloration to conceal, pass on an all-over facial primer. “The only thing that primers are good for is texture,” explains Reynolds. However, eye primers are a different story. “I always use a primer for the eyes,” she says. One like Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($22, helps eye makeup adhere to your eyelids and prevents creasing or fading.
