An A&E Pocket Guide for January

Shen Yun Performing Arts

Culture Trip
1/22-24 More than 5,000 years of Chinese culture and legends come to life through dance and music in Shen Yun. This mesmerizing show includes a full traditional orchestra featuring ancient Chinese instruments, dancers in colorful costumes and animated backdrops. At the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre.

Clowning Around
Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey presents “Legends,’’ the newest Greatest Show on Earth. Circus clowns and other performers from around the globe demonstrate spectacles of strength and daring feats to summon the mythical, magical creatures of the past: a unicorn, Pegasus and a woolly mammoth. At the Amway Center.

Brave Hearts
Where can you see men in kilts tossing huge stones and telephone poles around to prove their manhood? At the Scottish Highland Games at Central Winds Park in Winter Springs, that’s where. Plus, Quidditch! Authentic Celtic food, music, dance, pipes and drums, and whiskey tasting round out the fun.

More Than a Box
Have you ever watched a toddler spurn a holiday toy and instead play with the box? That’s the spirit behind The Daily City Cardboard Art Festival, a celebration of creativity using cardboard at Say It Loud Studios. Shown: artist Brendan O’Connor’s work, “Box Office.” Think outside the… you know.

Flock Together
Check out the works of Tampa master printer John Costin in Portraits: The Birds of Paradise at the Maitland Art Center Galleries. Working on multiple-etched metal plates from photos and sketches and then hand-tinting the prints, Costin creates striking, lifelike images of local and exotic birds.

StarLite,Star Bright
At the Garden Theatre StarLite Film Festival in Winter Garden, you don’t have to pick and choose events: All-Access pass-holders can enjoy every film and panel discussion, including those with visiting filmmakers. The festival features micro-budget movies from around the world, right in our own backyard.

Dickens in Rep
The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, Parts I and II includes a cast of 30 actors playing more than 150 characters. The parts are presented in repertory, one week apart. Or on select Saturdays, theatergoers can watch the entire performance, with a break for Victorian tea. At the Orlando Shakespeare Theater.

Love Notes
Once, the story of a star-crossed guy and girl and the songs they create together while performing on the streets of Dublin, won 8 Tony Awards in 2012, including Best Musical. The actor/musicians play their own instruments onstage. At the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre.

Just Folks
The Mennello Museum of American Art in scenic Loch Haven Park is the site of the Orlando Folk Festival, where traditional folk art and crafts are on display and available for purchase. The family-friendly festival also features local and regional singers, songwriters and bands on a stage overlooking Lake Formosa.
