The First Impression

The first impression guests receive of an upcoming wedding is the invitation. It gets them excited and sets the stage for what you have in store, says invitation artisan Lindsey Luxa, owner and of Orlando’s Dragonfly Custom Design (dragonflycustomdesign.com). “A real invitation is a memory; a tangible piece to keep and remember your day,” says Luxa, whose elaborate custom creations have included an invitation housed in a miniature suitcase for a destination wedding, wood and glass etchings, and invites made of Astroturf, edible materials or game board pieces. Luxa says the message goes far beyond relaying the details; it shows you care about every single detail. “They don’t have to cost $50 apiece to be extraordinary; simplicity can be stunning, as long as it is executed properly.” Invitations can cost less than a dollar each for standard printed invitations at stationery stores or run up to $100 or more for a single high-end, custom invite by artisans like Luxa and Orlando Wedding Bridal Council member Amy Morelli at The 2U Collection (2ucollection.com). Regardless, consider the level of formality, theme, location, color scheme and other details when selecting invitations, because you only get one chance to make a first impression.

Tasteful Favors

There all are sorts of flavorful and affordable wedding favors that will leave a lasting impression on your guests. Sprinkles in Winter Park has come up with a mess-free way for guests to have their cake and take it home, too: CakeShooters (cakeshooters.com) are push-pop-style layers of cake and frosting (left) that come in a variety of flavors and run $3 each or $36 per dozen. College Park’s Cookie Cousins (thecookiecousins.com) makes handmade sugar cookies that are custom-designed to fit your wedding theme and colors, including personalized rectangular cookies to serve as table place cards; prices start at $1.50 each. For sculptural chocolate delights that are almost too pretty to eat, Sweet Maralyn’s in Lake Mary (sweetmaralyn.com) offers a variety of creative confections and monogrammed strawberries dipped in dark and white chocolate; prices start at $3 each. For a DIY option, put Jordan almonds, candies or other treats in clever containers from Michael’s (locations at michaels.com), such as pretty little ribbon-tied boxes with revealing windows, $19.99 for a package of 30; or translucent bags with ribbon closures, $5.99 for a package of 12.
