Blame Game

Orlando’s name was mud after the nationally televised Capital One Bowl (above) on New Year’s Day in the Citrus Bowl turned into a slop-fest between LSU and Penn State. City and stadium officials blamed the lousy playing conditions on a cold front and rainfall that hit the area in mid-December, just as new sod had been laid in preparation for the Champs Sports Bowl, on Dec. 29, and the Capital One Bowl. The result was a quagmire, with clumps of turf strewn all over the field as players’ cleats tore up the muck. LSU receiver Brandon LaFell called it “by far the worst field conditions I’ve ever seen in my life.”
