Best of Orlando

Best is so subjective. One person’s idea of the best hair salon in town might be her neighbor’s hairiest nightmare. And somebody’s choice for the city’s best sportscaster could make someone else change the channel. So when we asked you—our readers—to send us your nominations for the Best of Orlando in 83 categories, we knew there would be some disagreement. But we had faith that, somehow or other, you would arrive at a sort of collective wisdom. That’s how it seems to work every year. In our survey, you may recall, we were looking for the best in such areas as “Eat and Drink,” “Personalities,” “Goods/Services,” “Media” and the vague but useful “Potpourri.” Our categories range from such standards as “best brunch” and “best bookstore” to less expected entries, including “best place to get married,” “best pet accessories store” and “local hero.” After you’ve looked at this list, keep it near. It just might come in handy.

Alan Grayson, Super-Achiever

Alan Grayson grew up in a high-rise apartment in the Bronx with views of Yankee Stadium and the Manhattan skyline. His parents, both public-school teachers, strongly supported his academic achievements. He graduated from Harvard in three years and went on to get a law degree from the prestigious university. As an attorney, Grayson, 50, gained wealth and recognition from his lawsuits against Iraq war contractors, claiming they had defrauded taxpayers. He and his wife, Lolita, moved to Orlando 12 years ago because they wanted to raise a family here. In November, Grayson, a Democrat, unseated Republican Ric Keller in the 8th Congressional District race. He will split time between Orlando, where he and Lolita live with their five children, and Washington.
