Outside Interests

Roberto Gonzalez

Welcome to the Finest Doctors issue, our annual resource featuring listings of more than 500 doctors chosen for excellence by their peers in dozens of specialties. Sprinkled among those names you’ll find first-person accounts of physicians relating memorable moments in their careers. And starting on page 79 is a special section in which physicians tell about themselves and their practices.

It’s this last part where you’ll find some remarkable facts. The information about doctors’ degrees, certifications and specialties is important, but the profiles get really interesting in the “off-hours’’ section. One in particular caught my eye: Dr. Robert P. Winter of Florida Vascular Consultants performs in his free time as a guitarist with the band Running With Scissors. Meanwhile, colleague Dr. G. Kendrix Adcock has a second career as a magician/illusionist dubbed “The Amazing Kendrix.’’

Among other doctors, the outside interests include tinkering with a classic Chevelle, wood carving, writing award-winning science fiction, teaching a spin class, hiking the Appalachian Trail and, get this, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro (well done, Dr. Stephen Reed). But you’ll find the doctors also treasure another kind of free time—free as in donating their expertise to charitable groups and those less fortunate. Examples include eye surgery for the poor in Mexico, plastic surgery for victims of domestic violence or those with deformities, and free health care for the uninsured through the Shepherd’s Hope organization.

Still on the subject of giving, check out our story on Clean the World, an Orlando-based nonprofit that takes discarded hotel soap and recycles it into clean bars distributed in 70 countries where sanitary issues kill millions of children and adults. You’ll learn how washing with soap can indeed be a lifesaver.

Also in this issue, we provide some goodies that you may want to add to your wish list in our holiday gift guide; Answer Man explores the lives of urban otters; Kristen Manieri delivers the scoop on outdoor movie nights throughout the Orlando area; Joseph Hayes dishes on Kabooki Sushi and The Smiling Bison; and Greg Dawson ponders on the strangeness of Florida “winters’’—as in stocking up on winter clothes for those chilly 70-degree days.

Attention, artists! Just one month remains to submit your entries for consideration in our 12th annual Paint the Town art exhibit. The show runs for three weeks in March at the Gallery at Avalon Island downtown. Go to orlandomagazine.com for details. We’re looking to showcase works that capture the spirit of Orlando in your mind’s eye in any medium, including painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media. Deadline to enter is January 6.

Also, be sure to vote for your favorite restaurants in our annual Dining Awards poll. At our website you’ll find a ballot with dozens of categories, from Best Barbecue to Most Romantic Restaurant. Just for voting, you’ll have your name entered in a drawing for a free dinner at a top restaurant.
