[Spotlights] Star Attraction
Singing is a big production at the new CityWalk karaoke bar.
You can be a singing sensation—or, at least, you can think that you are—at Rising Star, the glitzy new karaoke bar at Universal CityWalk.
This is not some dingy little dive that’s goosing up the gate with a feedback-prone mic and some primitive sing-along contraption.
When you take the stage here, you’re bathed in fancy lighting and enveloped in artificial fog, while your image is projected on three large screens above your head. A high-octane emcee introduces you, a four-piece combo accompanies you and two backup singers with surprisingly witty moves do their best to make you look good.
With all of that going on, you’d better be able to carry a tune.
The energy of the live band can be “overwhelming to people who aren’t really good singers,” explains emcee D. Nasty (aka David Nicoll). “So we don’t have a lot of horrible singers. We have mediocre to really good.”
You select your song from a list that includes everything from Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be Wild” to Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” to Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.” There is also the Pink tune, “Get the Party Started.”
Step on stage, open your mouth and maybe you will.
(On Sundays and Mondays, the band is replaced by recorded music)
