Young Artists Competition Finalist Recital

Kirov Orchestra
November 2 Founded in the 18th century and once known as the Russian Imperial Opera Orchestra, the Kirov Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre performs Prokofiev’s “Cinderella Suite” and “Romeo and Juliet, Act II,” and Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 4,” under the direction of Valery Gergiev, who is also principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, principal guest conductor of the Metropolitan Opera and principal conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic. 7 p.m. $30 and up. Giving Thanks With Music

Handel’s Messiah
November 30 Now in its 36th year, this community group presents its free performance of what is arguably the most loved oratorio in the world, and which includes “The Hallelujah Chorus.” Choral singers from throughout Central Florida are joined by professional soloists and a professional orchestra, all under the direction of John V. Sinclair of Rollins College. Doors open at 2:15 p.m.; concert 3 p.m. First come, first seated; no tickets are required. Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre.

Bach’s Lunch
November 6, 13, 20 Musicians from the University of Central Florida are featured in this month’s free midday concerts, with the trombone ensemble directed by Roy Pickering on November 6, the saxophone ensemble directed by George Weremchuck on November 13 and the guitar ensemble directed by Eladio Scharrón on November 20. Il Trovatore
November 14-18 Think you don’t know anything about opera? Check out Il Trovatore, and bells of recognition might start chiming in your brain. Among the familiar music is the “Anvil Chorus,” popular as a Glenn Miller jazz version and parodied in numerous the cartoons. You might also recognize the name of the conductor: Anton Coppola. Music for a Celebration
November 8 The seventh annual Sunset and Symphony concert at Bok Tower Gardens features the Philharmonic along with the bells of the Singing Tower carillon in a program of pops, light classics, Broadway hits and patriotic favorites. Attendees are encouraged to pack a picnic or preorder a boxed dinner by calling 863-676-1355, and to bring chairs, blankets, insect repellent and flashlights. Super Series III: Lincoln’s Year
November 1 A state-of-the-art audio and visual presentation commemorates an event from 200 years ago, the birth of Abraham Lincoln, as the Phil collaborates with photochoreographer James Westwater and the Orange County Regional History Center in anticipation of Lincoln’s Bicentennial Celebration, coming in January. Westwater uses multi-image projected photography to appeal to more visually oriented audiences. The music on the program includes a work written by the Phil’s new composer-in-residence, Stella Sung, in tribute to Lincoln. 8 p.m. $13-$65. Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre. 407-770-0071.

Super Series IV: Home for the Holidays
November 29 Andrew Lane leads the Philharmonic in a program of holiday favorites in this annual concert. In the spirit of the holidays, patrons are asked to bring canned and nonperishable food items to help the Second Harvest Food Bank restock local food pantries. 2 and 8 p.m. $13-$65. UCF Symphony Orchestra
