Orlando Museum of Art

Orlando Museum of Art

The Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) finishes out my top five wedding venue picks. I have planned and attended numerous events at this location and it continues to be one of my favorites. Not only do you have several locations within the museum to hold your party but you can also allow guests to wander through the museum (priced as a part of your package). The facilities can accommodate everything from small groups of 50 to large events of 1,000. The OMA works with an esteemed list of approved caterers and other vendors. Visit OMA.org for info on its policies, procedures and price structures.

BHLDN

BHLDN

Anthropologie has finally unveiled its much-anticipated bridal line (follow-up on Sept. 24 blog post), but you won’t find it in Anthropologie stores.  The line will be carried in BHLDN stores. BHLDN, (pronounced beholden), meaning “to keep” in Dutch, will offer gowns priced at less than $4,000. The dresses stay true to Anthropologie’s unique style, with  lots of layers, textures, patterns, ruffles, pleats and other feminine details. BHLDN also will carry shoes, jewelry, lingerie, hair adornments and other accessories. I’m in love with everything it’s offering. Visit BHLDN.com for a sneak peak of its styles.

The Engagement Party

The Engagement Party

You’re engaged—it’s time to celebrate! Traditionally, the bride's parents host the engagement party. If they’re unable, the duties fall to the groom's parents or friends. When selecting the date make sure parents, relatives, and close friends can all attend. Those making the guest list to the engagement party (or any other party pertaining to the wedding) should ultimately be invited to the wedding as well. To avoid hurting anyone’s feelings, keep the party small. Gift giving is not mandatory at this type of event (so don’t include registry information on the invitation), however some guests may still bring a present.

Dressing the Mother of the Bride and Groom

Dressing the Mother of the Bride and Groom

Dress styles have come a long way. And with so many designers, the new styles are flexible enough to be appropriate for bridesmaids, guests and now mothers of the bride and groom. Don't be afraid to try on bold colors or an unusual style; in these modern times, it's OK. My only warnings are not to wear white (or any variation of white) or to pick any type of outfit that will upstage the bride. (It is her day, after all!). But do find a dress that fits and flatters your body type. Check out dessy.com, niemanmarcus.com, nicolemiller.com and nordstrom.com. (Dress pictured is from Nordstrom.)

Cake Pops

Cake Pops

I just came across another great idea for wedding favors—a new trend called Cake Pops. They are bite-sized pieces of cake dipped in chocolate, put on a stick and decorated for any occasion. These individual deserts are the perfect treat for guests to take home and they can be fully customized to match your wedding colors and/or theme. Cake Pops come in a variety of cake and dipping flavors (my favorite is cookies and cream). Because the Cake Pops are made to order and by hand, allow 48 hours for customized orders to be processed. (Larger orders for weddings may take longer). Visit cakepops.com

Formal Place Settings

Formal Place Settings

According to Amy Vanderbilt’s Complete Book of Etiquette, brides account for almost half the silver, china and crystal sold in this country every year. I was surprised to hear this since most brides I’ve encountered don’t want to consider these items for their registry, as they are more comfortable with everyday flatware and place settings. If china or silver are being passed down from a family member–take it! If not, I always encourage brides to register for at least 4-6 place settings of china. Let’s get back to formal entertaining at least for special occasions. Search local retailers that carry brands like Wedgewood, Royal Doulton and Lenox.

IDoUniversity.com

IDoUniversity.com

IDoUniversity.com launched last week as a unique way of connecting wedding planners and vendors with brides to show them everything needed to plan the perfect wedding from start to finish. You can talk with other brides in the area and get real time advice from wedding professionals without the high-cost of hiring one (in some cases). Enrollment in the “university” provides a specific curriculum of online classes coupled with access to blogs, chats and field trips. And the best part is, your “enrollment” gets you discounts and savings with vendors that won’t be offered elsewhere. For more info and to join visit IDoUniversity.com
