Science Shtick

A mixer at the Orlando Science Center will reach for the stars as well as the heights of humor.

Derek Demeter, Seminole State planetarium director, and author Norine Dworkin-McDaniel (below) will be guest speakers at "Science Night Live."

A pair of guest speakers who will be featured in the latest installment of "Science Night Live" at the Orlando Science Center will address two of the great imponderables of life: the workings of the cosmos and the behavior of your children.

The latest version of the periodic adults-only mixer--which gives grownups a chance to enjoy one another's company, adult beverages, and the center’s exhibits, including the observatory when weather permits--is Saturday night, March 3, from 8 to 11:30. The two speakers are Derek Demeter, director of the Emil Buehler Perpetual Trust Planetarium at Seminole State College, and Norine Dworkin-McDaniel, co-author of Science of Parenthood: Thoroughly Unscientific Explanations for Utterly Baffling Parenting Situations.

Dworkin-McDaniel, who developed her quirky expertise about child-rearing via a cleverly illustrated humor blog, has moved on to apply it to a stand-up comedy routine that includes riffs from biology, chemistry, physics and math with practical advice about wrangling the wee ones.

Demeter’s talk, “Solving the Mysteries of Our Universe, One Piece at a Time,” will be presented twice, at 9 and 10. He plans to discuss “the amazing things we have learned so far, and what new secrets could be revealed to future scientists for generations to come.”

Limited tickets remain. Visit osc.org for information.
